Welcome to Worship — Rev. Johan Dodge

Good Morning and Welcome to Worship! Worship is often the first place that new people come into contact with this growing community of faith. And so, if you are joining us for the first time, I say to you what is said every Sunday: You are welcome here. Here is a place where all are welcome. For such is the love of God for God’s Very Good Creation. ADVENT 1: Creation — Taylor White As our nights grow longer and our days grow short, we look on these earthly signs — light and green branches — and remember God's promise to our world: Christ, our Light and our Hope, will come.

Listen to the words of Creation in Genesis And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. — Genesis 1:9-13

Call to Worship: "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" — Doxology for Advent ()

Liturgist — Taylor White Let us pray …

ALL: O Lord our God, you gave us, your creation, the earth upon which to thrive and share in your gifts of abundance. And yet we have turned to ourselves and held our desires above yours. Place into our hearts a love for others even as we grow in our understanding of your love for us and all of your creation. May the light that we light today remind us that we are not to place ourselves first as we labor together to build the new earth in your name. Amen.

Hymn: "Angels We Have Heard on High"
[please be seated]
Prayers of Intercession — Rev. Johan Dodge

Loving God, in your mercy you hear our cries and know the hidden desires of our hearts. We come to you praying for ourselves and your community.

We pray for the witness of the church, that we might live the good news.

We pray for the global community, that we might learn from each other and live in peace.

We pray for the needs in our community, for we know that you, O God, are our provider.

We pray for those who suffer in mind, body, or spirit; make us agents of your healing power.

We remember those who have died; help us to comfort those who grieve.

We lift up to you the silent prayers we hold in our hearts and minds.

We ask all these things for the glory and honor of your name, through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

[A time of silence is kept after each petition.] [please stand as you are able]
Hymn: "Go Tell It on the Mountain"
[please be seated]
Prayer for Illumination — Taylor White

O Lord, you have the words of eternal life. Speak to us by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we might hear what you would say to us today. Amen.

Scripture — Taylor White
Mark 13:1-8

1As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” 2Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” 3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.
